We failed, big time.

Last Monday, one of us set a goal to wake at 6am, walk 5km and write 1000 words of our new book before breakfast each weekday. The weekly tally should have been 25km and at least 5000 new words in the book.

Instead it looked like this:

• Monday – 5km, 1000 words
• Tuesday – 5km, 4000 words already written, cut and pasted from elsewhere in 5 minutes
• Wednesday – 5km, zero words
• Thursday – slept in, 5km mid-morning, 1000 words after dinner
• Friday – slept in again, 5km mid morning, no words

The goal wasn’t strictly met. Two mornings involved a sleep-in, two days went by without any words written. A third was a ‘cheat’ day, with existing words cut and pasted.

This is the usual dialogue, isn’t it?

“I failed.”
“I don’t have enough willpower.”
“I always fall short.”

Not:

“Wow! I walked 25km this week!”
“I listened to my body and slept later when I needed to rest.”
“There are 6000 words that wouldn’t have been in the book without those two days of writing and the cutting and pasting.”

Yesterday was a fun run that Emma was going to walk in memory of her husband. Instead, she slept in and went for a solo walk at home. Things change. Sometimes (often) we DO meet our big goals. But when we’re agile and adaptive, we can sweep up what was achieved towards goals we don’t quite reach, partially meet them — and still be ahead.

This week, look for times where you can turn a situation around simply by changing the way you respond to your own actions and choices. Bend your own rules. Be your own friend. And, at the end of the week, with a kinder focus, acknowledge any of the progress you’ve made. It all counts as movement forward.
